What is Items for Hours?
The “Items for Hours” initiative was born during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, when traditional volunteering and on-site service opportunities were suddenly halted due to safety restrictions. Providence House faced a unique challenge: how could residents and community members continue meeting their volunteer or service requirements — for school, church, or community programs — when they couldn’t physically be present?
Rather than letting connection and contribution stop, the Providence House team created a safe, alternative way to serve: by allowing people to earn volunteer hours through donating much-needed household and program items.
This innovation quickly became a bridge between the shelter and the wider community. Students, civic groups, and individuals who needed service hours, such as high school seniors, Greek organizations, corporate teams, and church ministries, could continue helping families in crisis by purchasing and dropping off essential items like linens, towels, toiletries, and cleaning supplies.
For Providence House residents, the program also became a lifeline. It ensured that those balancing jobs, children, or health challenges could stay active and in good standing by giving back in a tangible way.
What began as a creative pandemic workaround has evolved into a sustainable volunteer pathway, keeping the spirit of generosity alive while meeting real needs. It’s now one of Providence House’s most practical and impactful programs a reminder that even in challenging times, compassion finds a way.
