A host of families, friends, and community leaders celebrated and honored ten Providence House graduating families on Thursday, September 26, 2024. This monumental event marked 673 families completing the program since the agency’s inception in 1988 — an indicator of the agency’s commitment to breaking the homeless cycle one family at a time.
The ten families, all headed by single mothers, have persevered and remained focused on the end goal of leading a self-sufficient life. “This program is a great example of what can happen when a community rallies together for the greater good,” said Executive Director Verni Howard. “We will not give up on the mission until we have provided every family with an opportunity for a better life,” added Howard.
Britney Green, Chief of Domestic Violence in the Special Victims Unit of the Caddo District Attorney’s Office, delivered an inspiring and motivational commencement address. A prosecutor since 2008, Green is an award-winning trial lawyer, United States Marine, and certified mindset coach. A graduate of Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University College of Law, Green handles felony cases involving all manners of family violence, including domestic violence homicides. Her passion for serving young people in our community is underscored by her key philosophy that “You have the power to create the life that you want to live.”
For 36 years, Providence House has offered life-changing support to homeless families with children, most of whom are victims of domestic violence. The social ills of homelessness and poverty continue to plague our community resulting in poor economic, health, and educational outcomes. Providence House remains relentless in its efforts to change this trajectory one family at a time.
