Providence House continues to build our resident’s Workforce Development skills. Last week, we focused on serving on a team. This week, we will learn skills for setting and achieving goals. This language is being used in staff interactions with our residents.
Topic: Setting and Achieving Goals
A goal is a dream with a deadline. — Napoleon Hill, American author
In order to achieve your goals, you must have a plan. You can’t say “I want that” and expect to be successful. The SMART method can help you set goals. Each letter of the word smart stands for a guideline you can use to shape your plan:
- Specific: A specific goal is clear and well-defined. Goals should not be vague like I want a better job.” Instead, they should be precise, like “I will become a team leader.”
- Measurable: You should be able to measure your success. Use exact amounts and dates when you set your goals. That way, you can check your progress.
- Achievable: Your goal should be something you can achieve. It should be challenging rather than easy, but also realistic for your situation. For example, most people would be incapable of reaching a goal to earn a million dollars next year.
- Relevant: Relevant goals focus on your career and interests. Your goals should matter to you. You may need to reflect on what’s important in your life.
- Time-based: You should have a deadline for achieving a goal. Time frames for different goals will vary depending on how complex they are.
Think about your long-term goals. Then figure out short-term goals that will help you reach the long-term ones. After you have decided on goals, write them down and share them with someone. Writing and discussing your goals shows your commitment to them and can keep you accountable.
You might face obstacles while working toward your goals. For your best chance at success, try to identify and plan for possible obstacles.
