“My Why” from Providence House Board of Directors

What is a board of directors?

A board of directors is the governing body of a nonprofit. The members of a nonprofit board focus on the high-level strategy, oversight, and accountability of the organization. This contrasts with employees or managers who oversee the day-to-day operations of the nonprofit (kindful.com).

Providence House is grateful to have a board of individuals who care deeply about the clients served through our programs. Members of the board understand that three crucial elements — education, workforce development, and housing — move families from homelessness to self-sufficiency and independence.

What is your why?

We recently asked board members, “What is your why for serving?” Following are a handful of the heartfelt responses we received. It is such a blessing to know our board, staff, volunteers, and community are working together toward our mission..

“The trauma of childhood is the catalyst for my work with Providence House. For years, I focused fully on my career and, while I have been successful, I felt like something was missing from my life. Being a Providence House board member allows me to help children have a better life.” –Steven Pracht, Lighthouse Builders

“I believe if you can be of help to another human being and make things better, then you need to do it. This is one of the reasons I serve on the Board at Providence House. I agree with the organization’s values and I love that clients are offered a hand up, not a hand out.” –Marcia Moffatt, Community Activist

” ‘To whom much is given, much is required’ is a spiritual obligation I choose to live by. When I first learned about Providence House and met Verni, I knew I wanted to become involved with the organization and help serve families there — continuing the commitment I made in medical school to serve the underserved.” –Dr. Evelyn Pryor, Med. Dir., Ochsner LSUH Ambulatory Care Internal Medicine Clinic

Providence House’s dedication to helping individuals succeed at life and the emphasis on high-quality child care are the main reasons I choose to support the organization!” –Justin Gambill, Cross Keys Bank

“I support Providence House because Providence House supported me when no one else could or would. The work Providence House is doing impacts the clients in a real and lasting way. This impact then has a ripple effect that begins in the home and spreads throughout the community.” –Melanie Wright, Kipu Systems
