PROVIDENCE HOUSE SEXUAL ASSAULT ADVOCACY PROGRAM

WHAT IS PROVIDENCE HOUSE DOING TO HELP SEXUAL ASSAULT VICTIMS?

Currently, we employ two full-time advocates who preform the crisis response and intervention, including the following:

assessment,
-
service planning,
-
safety planning,
-
counseling,
-
court assistance and accompaniment,
-
injunction assistance,
-
education and referrals in support of victims and their families.

PROVIDENCE HOUSE provides crisis intervention, a rape crisis line, advocacy and counseling for victims of sexual assault in Caddo, Bossier and Webster parishes. We also promote an educational campaign on the prevention of violence in the community.
Providing information to victims of their rights and resources available empower them, increase their safety, and make them feel like a partner in the process. The services Providence House provides allow victims to regain control, make informed decisions and choices, and access available community resources, allowing them to feel safe enough to address change within their lives.

SITUATION
Sexual assault is epidemic in our society. The most recent statistics from the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) state that one in six women and one in 33 men will experience sexual assault in their lifetime. In 2007, there were 248,300 victims of sexual assault, meaning that every two seconds, someone is victimized by sexual assault.
Locally, the Caddo Parish Sheriff ’s Office reported 517 sexual offenses in 2008, with 243 arrests (47%), while the Shreveport Police Department received 512 sexual assault complaints, resulting in 115 arrests (22.5%). Statistics from the Bossier Parish Sheriff ’s Office and the Bossier Police Department reported a combined 137 sexual assault cases in 2008.

YOU CAN HELP!
VOLUNTEER: Volunteers play a big role in helping us provide services to sexual assault victims. Each volunteer receives 40 hours of training, and they volunteer once a month on an on-call basis for a 12-hour shift.
